“If were going to compete at this level we need to travel with a full squad”
Glenn Tyreman (Head Coach)
A Spitfire side missing several regulars and travelling with just two subs were always going to be up against it in Oxford.
Oxford lined up strongly for this encounter with a surprise debut for ex spitfire Andy Hoggins recently released by Pro outfit Oxford RL.
The Cavaliers struck first and then went on the rampage scoring 18 points in as many minutes. The Spitfire were well and truly on the rack until a miss kick for touch let them back in the game. The game then became an arm wrestle with neither side scoring for 20 minutes.
With just 5 minutes till half time the visitors hit the panic button and several penalties allowed Oxford to score twice more to take a commanding 30-0 lead into the break.
The second half start brightly for the Spitfires and after some great attack and defence from both sides the Spitfires scored their only try of the game with hooker Harvey Sperry finding second rower Si Elsey with a clever pass allowing Elsey to crash through. He was ankle tapped but managed to reach the line to score. Matt Blackman converted the extras.
That was the only try the Spitfires would score as tired legs, lots of defence and 2 subs took its toll with the Cavaliers finally running out 60-6 winners.
The Spitfires now sit 4th in the division just in the play off places. A win in two week at home to Swindon the league leaders would get their season back on track.
