Southampton Spitfires 4 - 44 Guildford Giants
Giants too strong for reserves
Southampton Spitfires went down to Guildford Giants reserves 44-4. Despite this head coach Ben Woodhouse was pleased with his teams effort in this 9 a side curtain raiser. Guildford were quicker out of the blocks and there superior pace tore the larger Spitfires side to pieces making break after break. In the first 20 minute period the Giants racked up a total of 34 point to the Spitfires nil.
The second period looked better for the home side as they adapted to the Giants style of play and began to play some good rugby themselves. With a much improved Spitfires defence the Giants were only able to score once in the second period to extend their lead to 40 - 0.
In the final period the Spitfires reserves came to life and great forward carries by Nathan Nelson, Gav Pollock and Mike Trench laid the platform for the ball to go wide to winger Dave Whineary who crashed over to score. The conversion was taken by Tom Collins who hit the upright. This was a pleasing end to the final period which saw the home side outscore the visitors 4-0. The final scoreline of 44-4 was flattering to the Giants and if the Spitfires had played the first period like the final 2 the score line would have been much closer.
The reserves are in action again on Thursday eveing v RAF Odiham in a friendly.
